Breaking News: Mussina Retires

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that Mike Mussina has decided to retire. No official announcement has been made by the Yanks or Moose.

Thanks to WFAN for reporting this historic news.

See you in five years at Cooperstown, Moose. If there is any shred of justice in the baseball world, Mussina will be voted into the Hall of Fame.

  1. yea rite

  2. What a hell of a note to leave on. I may have been the last person on Earth to appreciate Mussina, but this past year made a believer out of me. Like Ol’ Blue Eyes, he’s doing it His Way.

And I’m glad to see that he doesn’t feel the compulsion to scrounge for 20 extra wins. But by 2015 or so the BBWAA is just going to say the hell with it, he’s in.

  3. Mussina had one of the best last seasons of a career. Others who went out on a high note, statistcally: Barry Bonds, 2007; Koufax, 1966; Ted Williams 1960; Joe Jackson 1920; Will Clark 2000; Tom Henke 1995.

  4. One wonders if Mussina might be susceptible to a Roger-like arrangement where he’ll come back in midsummer for the Yankees or some other contender.

  5. He was excellent last year, he had a very consistent career in a hitter’s era, and it’s great to see him go out on top.

Since it is so unusual for a pitcher to voluntarily retire after winning 20 games, I’d have to say it increases his chance to go into the Hall of Fame instead of hanging around for 3 more years just to get to 300.

  6. Mussina is the consummate jerk; he fit in so well in the armpit of America, AKA New York City. Hall of Famer? Sorry, Yank-em fans; not even close.
By the way Mikey: How’s that World Series ring fit????

  7. He was lucky this year

  8. The game i remember moose about is when the yankees were down to pedro in the playoffs. And moose came in relief with the bases loaded and shut down the sox the rest othe way.And the yankees went on to win.

  9. Dont get me wrong I like him but Wells, Cone, Key, Pettite, El Duque, and Clemons were all better post season Pitchers…. In a big game I would pick everyone of them over Moose…

  10. no HoF for mussina! he had a great ’08 season but that’s it. last year he stunk, then got some kind of rejuventation drink and had his first 20 game winning season? no! it don’t work like that dude!

  11. Thanks for the article, Tony.

As you know I read his book, and in it he said he values comfort and being a dad. Since he’s also a perfectionist, it would make sense for him to call it quits after winning 20 games at age 39.
