  • Comment on Racist Dixie Flag flying in Tampa by Damiac-99
Very controversial. Ya gotta be a Southern Boy to appreciate Dixie- they will tell you that it's an American military symbol with no political overtones. Obviously, I feel the same way you do- I see the CSA wanting slavery and weakening the Union- literally having a desire to destroy the U.S., which would have made us weaker in the World Wars (alternate […]

New Game: how far can you read?

http://www.pbs.org/idealab/2009/01/digital-community-builders-can-roll-their-own-economic-stimulus-package013.html

Please click the above link and see how far you get reading it — when your eyes start glazing over or you start shaking your head at the Utopian delusion, you've read far enough. Post your results here in the comments.

Thanks, Damian, for sparking the idea. This is a spin-off of the how far can you watch the video thing we've joked about.

After 2 tries I stopped here:

Then I skipped to the end.

He wants the entire bailout money to be invested in the Internet.

    Or something.

Morrison’s off-the-wall and his stories fall apart sometimes, but you’re not allowed to dislike him. He’s a “genius,” you see, and that exempts him from the responsibility to tell a clear, coherent story. In short, any disappointment is entirely the fault of the reader, for Lord Grant Cannot Make Mistakes. His work is flawless, and you are therefore the one responsible for a bad story.

The things he mentioned dont seem to produce jobs either that or he didnt get too specific in that area.
I would have at least said if theres nothing else to do lets at least have people pick up garbage or something.
I was able to read the whole thing but I had to kind of read it in “scan mode” to try to get to the meat of his actual ideas.
The ideas he has are okay if the government is willing to pay unemployed people to do the stuff he suggested.
The only thing he dosent seem to get is that the reason people cant find work is not because there are not services to help people find work, online or otherwise.
Thats not new thats already being done.
Its just that for every one job available there are like 20 or more people applying to them so there are not enough jobs to apply to.
Im not against the government creating these jobs directly if the free market cant, but they have to be real jobs for people who need them, not just social worker positions.

If the jobs cant be created by the free market or the government then the federal government are going to have to start using death squads to kill all the poor people because there are not enough prisons.

Look, if the jobs are not there because the “free market” cant provide them then the market has failed and then the government has to do it whether it costs money or not.
Its either the government creates the jobs or they put everybody out of work on food stamps and welfare with government housing which will also require a lot more taxes or debt to finance it.

there really is no choice anymore.
It also costs money to build more prisons or hire more cops so the people who pay taxers are going to see an increase no matter what, either that or higher debt or both.

    there is no way out.
everybody better just accept that the system as we know it has failed.

The fact that I cant even get hired to work at Publix proves that.

I am able bodied, and not too dumb, and good with people but none of that matters when a million people need a job and there are only a hundred available jobs.

This is a real crisis that cant be allowed to just “work itself out” without some kind of federal interference.

People died of starvation during the great depression, mostly in the rural areas because nothing was done.

I didnt hear any strong ideas from that guy I read, but im also not hearing anything from the usual cadre of am talk radio fools who think the economy will get better when the stock market does well, even though rent is still over a grand a month for most people and the only jobs out there are these4 8 dollar an hour positions whether one is educated or not.

and good luck getting one of those when there is a hundred people applying to it.

and as far as having two jobs are concerned, its gotten way tough to just get one.

Ive sent out hundreds of applications by now.

Im tellin you its pretty damn bad.
I dont know if the government has the solution or not but everyday its more stories of thousands of people being laid off and there is no other job available for them to get.

I can already see that whatever the next job I get is I am also going to have to get food stamps or some other kind of federal assistance to go with it.

It all sucks, and I just dont know what to say about it anymore.
well, back to making phone calls to try to set up an interview.

    good luck everybody.

    I got exactly this far…

    >> A bridge is infrastructure designed to connect people to each other for social and economic growth. Digital bridges can do the same for a fraction of the cost. <<

Even a poorly designed bridge poised to collapse will cost a few million bucks, but last 20 years. The upkeep on a web site per user crossing that bridge, over 20 years, is no bargain compared to a physical bridge.
