Shepard Smith
I recently had the displeasure of watching Shepard Smith on Fox News while sitting in a waiting room. Why was it a displeasure?
Well … he was talking about how Democrats refuse to come on his show to offer a counterpoint to his Republican guests. He followed this by saying that he would have to play the Democrat during interviews.
As the show went on, he was interviewing some Republican Senator and going on and on about how the public option for Obamacare was just an option that would create competition with the private sector.
This "Fair and balanced" journalist stated this over and over, as if it were an undeniable FACT.
Here's my take:
- Journalists should not play the opponent.
- He should state the opposition's point of view and ask his guest to address it. He should NOT play the opposition.
- If I wanted Oxford debating-style nonsense, where a person is asked to argue a point whether they believe it or not, I would watch a debate at the local College. In the real world, I expect journalists to strive to be unbiased and impartial, and guests to represent what they really believe in.
- A "public option" is double-speak for Government-run healthcare. Corporations want to get out of offering those benefits to workers, and insurance companies want everyone to be forced to buy coverage. You better believe it.
Shepard Smith needs to stop role-playing for Democrats, and needs to play it like a journalist or objective TV host.
