Is there such a thing as stupid questions?

I was having an email discussion today with a friend. During the discussion I received a reply where at the end where my friend referred to something. I had no idea what he was referring to.

I decided not to ask what he meant. It was stated kinda like, ” the sky is blue,” and I didn know what blue meant.

I knew my friend was busy, and I could find out later on my own what he actually met. So, I did not require a real-time response.

The whole thing reminded me of grade school, where the teacher, who is trying to promote conversation, says something like, “There’s no such thing as stupid questions.”

I think that’s a lie. There are definitely stupid questions. One should have the decency to know when to refrain from asking stupid questions.

Asking stupid questions in the classroom, for example, is a waste of everyone’s time. This is especially true if you can get your answer after class, or you could get your answer by studying a little more.

I know this is the typical DailySkew deep thought provoking question type of blog post that will drive Snapshot Joe crazy, but I think it needs to be said. Feel free to leave a comment, Snapshot Joe, or anyone else.

  1. I think you really have to dig deep to come up with a stupid question. Otherwise, anything should be on the table for questioning.

It depends on the setting, but generally speaking if your intention is to clear something up so you can better understand a topic, it’s not “stupid” and you are not “stupid”.

It’s only “stupid” when used to be sarcastic or to take away from a point.

  2. Hi you two! Thelma and Louise huh? Hopefully the convenience store robbery won't happen either! :)

  5. Some really stupid questions asked…I am not press and i could of asked better questions.

  6. Took me a long time to realize I was stupid. Still finding out I was stupid. And one way I figured out I was stupid, is I called her stupid at the beginning of the relationship… without any explanation. I didn't mean stupid like stupid stupid, but stupid in this way.

Yeah, that was stupid, and I mean stupid stupid.

I've always kind of seen this concept as: “Guys are morons, and girls are stupid”. The difference between the two doesn't span far, but at the same time it crosses the Pacific. It comes into a pyramid effect. At the top is the gender, then all the social constructs beneath that, how you are raised, your beliefs, whether or not you had a mullet anytime in your life, etc. But no matter what, at the bottom, there it is, in big bold letters: STUPID
