Political Translation: Mitt Romney “Very Poor” Comment

There’s been a lot of fuss made this week about Mitt Romney’s comments on CNN about the very poor. For the sake of understanding, I’ve decided to translate what Romney said into understandable English:

DailySkew Minute – Mitt Romney Very Poor

Quote:

“I’m not concerned about the very poor; we have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it. I’m not concerned about the very rich, they’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of the America, the 90 percent, 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling, and I’ll continue to take that message across the nation.”

Translation:

I believe SSI, unemployment benefits, Medicaid, Medicare, and private charities are enough to help out the very poor among us. If there are problems in the government programs, such as wasteful spending, I will demand that Congress fixes them, even though the very poor are not likely to vote for me. As a rich person, I can tell you I don’t lose sleep over fellow rich people. My buddies on Wall Street tend to vote Democrat, so there’s no point in worrying about them. The people I am worried about are the 90% in the middle who are likely voters and might have been laid off by Bain Capital, or know someone laid off by my old company. I want these people to understand that I do care for them, even if they were fired by my company in the past. I intend to talk about this until I’m blue in the face; if I say I care about the middle class enough times, eventually you’ll believe me.”

I hope that clears up this issue.
